EBONY WOOD : Diospyros crasiflora & gracilipes
Ebony wood - Distribution : north western part and eastern coast of the Island of Madagascar. Medium size tree 12-15 meters tall, diameter of 30-40 cm, found in dense tropical forest, predominantly in high humidity areas.
Ebony wood - Timber : the heartwood is perfectly black, with sometimes white streaks. The grain is extremely fine, almost invisible. The timber is hard with a density from 0.9 to 1.1 t/m3. The sapwood is wide, of white or light yellowish colour.
Ebony wood - Seasoning : in small dimensions, dries fairly quickly and well with little tendency to split or distort.
Ebony wood - Uses : for inlays, top quality joinery, sculptures, in stringed instruments for fingerboards, chin rests, pegs and bow parts. |
